Refinement of rodent research through environmental enrichment and systematic randomization

چکیده
Recently, conventional housing of laboratory rodents has been criticised for inducing abnormal behaviours and poor well-being, which also questions the validity of many animal experiments. Environmental enrichment may prevent abnormal behaviours and improve animal wellbeing, but concerns have been raised that it might also disrupt standardisation, thereby reducing the precision and replicability of animal experiments. In this article, we review the logic and evidence surrounding this debate. We show that animal welfare can be improved by beneficial enrichments without disrupting standardization. However, we also argue that standardization is a flawed concept, which entails the risk of obtaining results of poor external validity and therefore needs to be profoundly revised.

Cover interpolation functions and h-enrichment in finite element method
This paper presents a method to improve the generation of meshes and the accuracy of numerical solutions of elasticity problems, in which two techniques of h-refinement and enrichment are used by interpolation cover functions. Initially, regions which possess desired accuracy are detected. Mesh improvment is done through h-refinement for the elements existing in those regions. Total error of th...
متن کاملRefining laboratory rodent husbandry - recent advances
The three Rs of animal research Replacement, Reduction, Refinement first put forward by Russell and Birch (1959) have provided the foundation on which many of the advances in laboratory animal welfare have been built. The desired end-state is the complete replacement of animals in research, however until scientific advances make this feasible, efforts should be taken to refine husbandry procedu...
متن کاملOpportunities for improving animal welfare in rodent models of epilepsy and seizures
Animal models of epilepsy and seizures, mostly involving mice and rats, are used to understand the pathophysiology of the different forms of epilepsy and their comorbidities, to identify biomarkers, and to discover new antiepileptic drugs and treatments for comorbidities. Such models represent an important area for application of the 3Rs (replacement, reduction and refinement of animal use). Th...
متن کاملRefinement in the literature: Searching for environmental enrichment
The term environmental enrichment became more common among animal caretakers in zoo and research settings after the passage of the 1985 amendments to the United States Animal Welfare Act which introduced the concept of psychological well-being of nonhuman primates and required exercise for dogs. The standards promulgated by the US Department of Agriculture in response to the new mandates placed...
متن کاملUse it or lose it: environmental enrichment as a means to promote successful cognitive aging.
Environmental enrichment has become increasingly utilized in rodent models of aging and neurodegenerative disease in order to prevent or reverse cognitive decline and neuronal dysfunction. However, the potential application of this body of work to human cognitive aging has rarely been discussed. The present article provides an overview of the rodent research that has tested the effects of envir...
